John Baldwin Neil

John Baldwin Neil (born July 28, 1842 in Columbus , Ohio , † October 6, 1902 ) was an American officer and politician ( Republican Party ) who was governor of the Idaho Territory from 1880 to 1883 .

Civil War

Neil attended the Military Institute in Frankfort , Kentucky . After the outbreak of the Civil War , he enlisted on October 1, 1861 and first served for three months in Company B, 2nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry . At the same time he asked the governor of Ohio Dennison for an officer's license, but this did not give him. Allegations have been raised that the governor has given all of his relatives offices or officers' certificates. In the same year he was transferred to the 46th Ohio Volunteer Infantry and reached the rank of aide . He was wounded in the fighting at Shiloh , Tennessee on April 6, 1862. Later in the war he was promoted to Captain on April 14, 1864 , Major on January 23, 1865, and Lieutenant Colonel on July 16, 1865 . He and his regiment were then discharged with full honors on July 22, 1865 near Louisville , Kentucky. The regiment took part in the battles of Missionary Ridge , Kennesaw Mountain , Atlanta and Bentonville in addition to the Battle of Shiloh .

Further career

Neil was the private secretary of two Ohio governors, Rutherford B. Hayes and Edward F. Noyes , in 1865 . On September 5, 1871, he married Marion Jones, the daughter of Captain E. Penrose Jones, with whom he had a daughter named Edith. Neil served as the registrar of the Salt Lake City , Utah Land Registry in 1878 . Then he was nominated for governor in 1880 and was territorial governor of Idaho until 1883 .
