Horace C. Gilson

Horace C. Gilson was an American politician . In 1866 he was briefly acting territorial governor for the Idaho Territory .

Career

There are hardly any usable sources about Horace Gilson. Neither his life data nor his professional career or party affiliation are known. In September 1865 he was named Secretary of State for the Idaho Territory, and in 1866 he was appointed acting successor to the late C. de Witt Smith as Territorial Governor. He only held this office for a short time. He took the treasury and fled abroad with the money. As for the amount stolen, there are two different figures in the sources. ($ 25,000 and $ 41,062, respectively). He may have fled to Hong Kong and later to Paris in France. He was later caught but never charged.
