James H. Brady
James Henry Brady (born June 12, 1862 in Indiana County , Pennsylvania , † January 13, 1918 in Washington DC ) was an American politician and governor of the state of Idaho from 1909 to 1911 . Between 1913 and 1918 he represented his state in the US Senate .
Early years and political advancement
James Brady moved with his parents to Johnson County , Kansas , in 1865 . There he attended public schools and Leavenworth Normal College . During a subsequent law degree, he supported his family by earning money as a teacher. He also became the editor of a newspaper that appeared twice a week, and he got into the real estate market. As a real estate agent, he had offices in three states. In 1895, James Brady moved to Idaho, where he worked in hydropower and irrigation.
Brady was a member of the Republican Party . In 1900, 1908 and 1916 he was a delegate to the Republican National Conventions . Between 1904 and 1908 he was chairman of his party in Idaho. He also served as President of the Trans-Mississippi Commercial Congress and Vice President of a federal congress dealing with irrigation issues. In 1908 he was elected the new governor of his state.
Governor and US Senator
James Brady began his two-year term as governor on January 4, 1909. During his reign, a disabled school for the blind and deaf was established and the pre-election principle was introduced in Idaho. In addition, money was made available for a children's charity. On the issue of Prohibition was decided in Idaho for a local solution. This left the decision on alcohol laws to the municipalities and districts. After a failed re-election attempt in 1910, Brady returned to his extensive business.
After the death of US Senator Weldon B. Heyburn , Brady was elected as his successor in a by-election. He replaced Kirtland I. Perky , who had held the office temporarily. After Brady was elected to a separate term in 1914, he was able to exercise this mandate between January 24, 1913 and his death on January 13, 1918. Brady was Senate Chairman of the Committee on National Banks and a member of the Committee on Disposition of Useless Executive Papers . He was married twice and had two children.
