Steven Douglas "Steve" Symms (born April 23, 1938 in Nampa , Idaho ) is an American politician . The Republican represented Idaho in both houses of the United States Congress .

Life

Steve Symms, a graduate of Caldwell High School , studied business administration at the University of Idaho , where he received his bachelor's degree in 1960 . He then served for three years as a soldier in the United States Marine Corps . As a young man, he took over his parents' farm and the family business Symms Fruit Ranch, Inc. , which had specialized in growing and selling fruit. In the late 1960s, he also briefly worked as a journalist when he was co-editor of the Idaho Compass for around two years .

Symms, who until then was not known at the state or federal level, ran successfully for a seat in the United States House of Representatives in 1972 . He was sworn in on January 3, 1973 and then re-elected three times. In 1980 he announced his candidacy for the office of US Senator . Again he was able to record a success, as he was able to defeat the long-time democratic incumbent Frank Church . Symms, who took up his new mandate on January 3, 1981, completed two terms as senator and resigned on January 3, 1993 from the second Congress Chamber.

After his retirement from politics, he founded the business consultant firm Symms, Lehn Associates, Inc . In 1999 he and his partner John Haddow opened Symms & Haddow Associates . Today Symms is a co-owner of the lobbyist company Parry, Romani, DeConcini & Symms , in which the former Democratic US Senator Dennis DeConcini from Arizona is also involved.

Others

Although a strictly conservative Republican, Steve Symms is said to have been in liaison with several women during his time in Washington, DC , even though he was married. In the mid-1970s, he also had a relationship with his chief of staff and campaign manager Helen Chenoweth-Hage , who was later also elected Congresswoman. He now lives in Virginia with his second wife, Loretta .

Steve Symms is a nephew of Elmo Smith , a former governor of Oregon , and the cousin of former Congressman Denny Smith .
