George V. Hansen (1975)

George Vernon Hansen (born September 14, 1930 in Tetonia , Teton County , Idaho , † August 14, 2014 in Pocatello , Idaho) was an American politician . Between 1965 and 1969 and from 1975 to 1985 he represented the second constituency of the state of Idaho in the US House of Representatives .

Early years and advancement

George Hansen attended public schools in his home country and then Ricks College in Rexburg . Between 1956 and 1957 and from 1962 to 1963 he studied at Idaho State University . In the meantime he graduated from Grimms Business College in 1958. Between elementary school and college, George Hansen was a member of the US Air Force from 1951 to 1954 . Between 1964 and 1970 he was a member of the US Navy Reserve . From 1958 to 1965 he was also active in the insurance industry.

Political career

George Hansen became a member of the Republican Party . In 1961 and 1962 he was mayor of the municipality of Alameda, which was later merged with Pocatello . In 1962 he ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the US Senate, and in 1968 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention , at which Richard Nixon was nominated as the party's presidential candidate. In the 1964 congressional elections, Hansen was elected to the US House of Representatives in Idaho's second constituency, where he succeeded Ralph R. Harding on January 3, 1965 . After re-election in 1966, he was able to exercise his mandate in Congress until January 3, 1969. In the elections of 1968 he had renounced a renewed re-election in favor of a then unsuccessful candidacy for the US Senate. His seat then fell to Orval H. Hansen .

In 1972, George Hansen ran for a seat in the US Senate for the third time without success. Between 1969 and 1971 he worked for the US Department of Agriculture . He then returned to Potacello, where he devoted himself to his private business. In 1974 he was re-elected to the US House of Representatives. There he completed five further legislative terms between January 3, 1975 and January 3, 1985. In 1984 he was defeated by the Democrat Richard H. Stallings . Hansen was considered one of the most conservative congressmen of his time. In 1979, during the political crisis with Iran, he traveled to Tehran to negotiate with the Iranians.

Another résumé

In 1984 he was accused of failing to report all of his earnings. This matter also contributed to his electoral defeat. He was sentenced to 15 months in prison for the offense. This judgment was overturned by the Supreme Court in 1995 . Hansen became chairman of a political advisory firm in Washington . He last lived in Arlington , Virginia .
