Lewis H. Sweetser
Lewis Hobart Sweetser (born January 13, 1868 in San Francisco , California , † June 9, 1944 in Los Angeles , California) was an American politician . Between 1909 and 1913 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Idaho .
Career
Lewis Sweetser came from a family of ranchers who lived in southern Idaho from 1871. He was later sent back to his original homeland, where he graduated from the Urban School in San Francisco. He then studied at the University of California at Berkeley and then at Yale University . In 1889 he returned to the Idaho family ranch, where he ran cattle. He has also been involved in various other agricultural and business ventures. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In 1901 and 1902, and again from 1905 to 1906, he was a member of the Idaho House of Representatives .
In 1908, Sweetser was elected Lieutenant Governor of Idaho alongside James H. Brady . He held this office between January 4, 1909 and January 6, 1913. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . From 1911 he served under the new Governor James H. Hawley .
In his later years, Sweetser wrote historical articles in newspapers and gave lectures on history. Since 1902 he was married to Clara Hawkins. After her death in the mid-1930s, he succumbed to spiritualism and occultism. He died in Los Angeles on June 9, 1944, the day after his longtime friend and business partner, George Burroughs. Both were burned together in a crematorium.
