Roger Cowley

Roger A. Cowley (born February 24, 1939 , † January 27, 2015 ) was a British physicist who worked on experimental solid-state physics.

He studied at Cambridge University , where he received his bachelor's degree in 1960 and his doctorate in 1963. He was then a Research Fellow at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, and from 1964 Research Officer at "Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd.". From 1970 he was Professor at the University of Edinburgh and from 1988 Professor of Experimental Physics at Oxford and Fellow of Wadham College . For eight years he was also chairman of the physics faculty in Oxford. Since 2008 he was professor emeritus there.

Cowley studied solid and condensed matter with X-ray diffraction and neutron scattering, for example the phonon dispersion curves in ion crystals, structural phase transitions in crystals, spin wave excitations and excitations in liquid helium 3 and 4. He also investigated various magnetic systems, the Heisenberg and Ising models in correspond to different dimensions, and tested the theoretical predictions about the nature of their phase transitions.

Cowley was the first recipient of the Max Born Prize in 1973 .

He was a Fellow of the Royal Society and the Royal Society of Edinburgh . Cowley was married with two children.
