John V. Evans

John Victor Evans (born January 18, 1925 in Malad City , Oneida County , Idaho , † July 8, 2014 in Boise , Idaho) was an American politician and was governor of the state of Idaho from 1977 to 1987 . He was a member of the Democratic Party .

Life

Evans was first elected to the Idaho Senate in 1952 . In 1954 and 1956 he was re-elected, and from 1956 he was the majority leader in the Senate. In 1960 Evans was elected mayor of his native city. He held this office until 1966. In 1968 he returned to the Idaho Senate, where he was a minority leader from 1969 to 1974. In 1974 he was elected lieutenant governor . When Cecil D. Andrus stepped down as governor in January 1977 to become Secretary of the Interior of the United States , Evans replaced him. He was confirmed in the 1978 and 1982 elections, with a very narrow victory over the future governor Phil Batt in 1982 . In 1986, in favor of Andrus' surprising return to politics, Evans waived another re-election and ran for the US Senate instead , but narrowly defeated Republican Steve Symms . Andrus succeeded Evans in 1987 to the post of governor.

Evans retired from politics and in 1987 became president of DL Evans Bank , an Idaho-based credit institution. Most recently Evans lived in Burley . He died of hip replacement surgery on July 8, 2014 at his home in Boise, Idaho, at the age of 89.
