John Miller (1985)

John Ripin Miller (born May 23, 1938 in New York City , New York - † October 4, 2017 in Corte Madera , California ) was an American politician . Between 1985 and 1993 he represented the state of Washington in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Miller attended his homeland public schools and Friends Seminary . He then studied until 1959 at Bucknell University in Lewisburg ( Pennsylvania ). After completing a law degree at Yale University and being admitted to the bar in 1965, he began working in his new profession in Seattle , Washington state. In 1960, Miller actively served in the US Army . After that he was a member of their reserve until 1968 . Between 1981 and 1984 he was an associate professor at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma .

Politically, Miller was a member of the Republican Party . Between 1965 and 1968 he served as Assistant Attorney General of Washington State; from 1972 to 1980 he was a member and chairman of the Seattle City Council. In the 1984 congressional election , Miller was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the first constituency of his state , where he succeeded Joel Pritchard on January 3, 1985 . After three re-elections, he was able to complete four legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1993 . In 1992, he decided not to run again.

Between 2002 and 2006, John Miller served as a division head in the US State Department . He then became a faculty member at George Washington University . He also worked for the Discovery Institute on international affairs and human rights.

Miller died in early October 2017 at the age of 79 years to cancer .
