Jay Robert Inslee (born February 9, 1951 in Seattle , Washington ) is an American politician . Inslee has been Governor of Washington State since January 16, 2013 .

Career

Jay Inslee attended Ingraham High School until 1969 . He then studied in 1969 and 1970 at Stanford University in California and then until 1972 at the University of Washington . After studying law at Willamette University in Oregon and being admitted to the bar in 1976, he began working in his new profession. Between 1976 and 1984, Inslee was the legal representative for the city of Selah .

Politically, Inslee joined the Democratic Party . Between 1988 and 1992 he was a member of the Washington House of Representatives . In the 1992 congressional elections , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the fourth constituency of his state , where he succeeded Republican Sid Morrison on January 3, 1993 . Since he was not confirmed in 1994, he was initially only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until January 3, 1995. In 1996, Inslee unsuccessfully sought his party's nomination for gubernatorial elections . Between 1997 and 1998 he was the regional division manager in the US Department of Health .

In 1998 , Inslee was re-elected to Congress in Washington's first district. There he replaced Rick White on January 3, 1999 . In Congress, Inslee was considered progressive; he was a staunch opponent of the Iraq war . He was a member of the Committee on Energy and Commerce and the Committee for management of natural resources ( Committee on Natural Resources ). He was also represented in two sub-committees. He has been married to Trudi Inslee since 1972, with whom he has three sons.

On March 20, 2012, he resigned to pursue his candidacy for governor of Washington. The election, which took place at the beginning of November 2012, was just won by Inslee when it received around 51 percent of the vote.

In February 2014, Inslee imposed a moratorium on the use of the death penalty in the US state he ruled.

On November 8, 2016, Inslee again won the gubernatorial election in Washington by a clear margin. In January 2017 he was able to take up a second term of office.

In June 2017, the governor sharply criticized the US President Donald Trump's announcement that the US would withdraw from the Paris Agreement on global climate protection. At the same time he announced a continuation and intensification of the efforts of his state to fight climate change. Washington also joined an alliance for climate protection from other states. These include the democratically governed states of California , New York and Virginia . Even the governor of Massachusetts , Charlie Baker , a moderate Republican, joined the coalition.

On March 1, 2019, Inslee announced its candidacy for the 2020 US presidential election . In August he finished his candidacy and decided to seek another term as governor.
