Brian Baird (born March 7, 1956 in Chama , New Mexico ) is an American politician . From 1999 to 2011 he represented the state of Washington in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Brian Baird studied at the University of Utah in Provo until 1977 and then until 1984 at the University of Wyoming in Laramie , where he studied philosophy and psychology. Between 1986 and 1998 he worked as a psychology professor at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma .

Politically, Baird joined the Democratic Party . In 1996 he ran for the first time, but unsuccessfully, for Congress . In the 1998 election he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the third constituency of his state , where he succeeded Linda Smith on January 3, 1999 . After being confirmed in all subsequent elections, he can continue to exercise his mandate today. Baird announced in December 2009 that he no longer wanted to run for 2010 . Thus, his membership in Congress ended on January 3, 2011. Baird considers the Iraq war to be an historic mistake in American foreign policy. Nevertheless, in 2007 he agreed to an extension of the American troop presence in this region.
