Pramila Jayapal (born September 21, 1965 in Madras , India ) is an American politician . Since January 3, 2017, she represents as a Member of the Democratic Party of the state of Washington in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Pramila Jayapal was born in India and grew up in Indonesia and Singapore . At the age of 16, she came to the United States in 1982, where she graduated from college. She then studied at Georgetown University and Northwestern University . After finishing her studies in 1986 she mainly worked as a financial analyst. She worked in various companies. At times she also acted as a company consultant. In the meantime she was also a stock market analyst on Wall Street . In 2000 she was granted American citizenship. After the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001 , she campaigned for immigrant groups in the United States and advocated impartial behavior towards immigrants. She lives with her husband in Columbia City , a suburb of Seattle .

Politically, she joined the Democratic Party . She was a member of the Washington Senate from January 12, 2015 to December 12, 2016 . In the 2016 congressional election , Jayapal was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the Seventh constituency of Washington, DC against her fellow party member Brady Walkinshaw , where she succeeded Jim McDermott , who was no longer running in 2016, on January 3, 2017 .
