Jolene Unsoeld

Jolene Unsoeld (born December 3, 1931 in Corvallis , Oregon ) is a former American politician . Between 1989 and 1995 she represented the state of Washington in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Jolene Bishoprick, her maiden name, attended preschool in Shanghai ( China ) between 1938 and 1940 . She then graduated from public schools in Portland and Vancouver, Washington. Between 1949 and 1951 she studied at Oregon State University in Corvallis. She married Willi Unsoeld (1926–1979), who was a mountaineer and later a college teacher. In the 1960s she accompanied her husband on a multi-year trip to the Himalayas . In Kathmandu she headed the English language institute in 1965 and 1967. Between 1971 and 1984 Jolene Unsoeld worked, among other things, as a lobbyist and consultant.

Politically, she became a member of the Democratic Party . From 1980 to 1988 she was a member of the Democratic National Committee ; between 1985 and 1988 she was a member of the Washington House of Representatives . In the 1988 congressional elections Unsoeld was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the third constituency of her state , where she succeeded Don Bonker on January 3, 1989 . After two re-elections, she was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress until January 3, 1995 . There she campaigned for the Freedom of Information Act . In general, she was considered liberal. An exception to this was their opposition to a gun control law in the United States.

In the 1994 election, Jolene Unsoeld was defeated by Republican Linda Smith . After that, she has held no further political office to this day.
