Kim Schrier

Kimberly Merle "Kim" Schrier (born August 23, 1968 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American politician . Since January 3, 2019, it represents the state of Washington in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Kim Schrier was born in Los Angeles, where she also grew up. Her grandparents were Jewish migrants who fled Europe before World War II. From 1986 to 1991 she attended the University of California, Berkeley , where she graduated with a bachelor's degree in astrophysics and was accepted into the Phi Beta Kappa Honorary Society. She then attended the UC Davis School of Medicine in Sacramento from 1992 to 1997 , where she received her doctorate in medicine . From 1997 to 2000 she completed her specialist training as a pediatrician at Stanford University School of Medicine . She then worked in this role for a year in Ashland , Oregon, before moving to the Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle , Washington.

In the election to the 116th Congress of the United States Schrier, as a member of the Democratic Party , stood for the 8th electoral district in Washington. The previous Republican MP Dave Reichert did not run again for election. This opened up a chance for Democrats to conquer this constituency - which Hillary Clinton won by three percent in the 2016 presidential election. Her election campaign focused on Medicare and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act . After she won the primaries against her party colleagues for the seat, she finally prevailed against the Republican candidate Dino Rossi with 53.10% of the vote. She took up her new position on January 3, 2019.

Personal

Schrier is married to David Gowing. Together they are parents of a son and live in Sammamish . She is type 1 diabetic .
