Linda Smith (born July 16, 1950 in La Junta , Colorado ) is an American politician . Between 1995 and 1999 she represented the state of Washington in the US House of Representatives .

Life

Linda Smith attended Fort Vancouver High School in Vancouver (Washington). After that, she managed a total of six tax consulting agencies. She then began a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1983 and 1986 she was a member of the Washington House of Representatives ; from 1987 to 1994 she was a member of the State Senate .

In the 1994 congressional elections , she was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the third constituency of her state , where she succeeded Jolene Unsoeld of the Democratic Party on January 3, 1995 . After re-election in 1996, she was able to complete two terms in Congress until January 3, 1999 . In 1998, Smith renounced another candidacy for the US House of Representatives. Instead, she ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the US Senate : She was defeated by the Democratic incumbent Patty Murray with 42:58 percent of the vote.

Linda Smith is a firm believer in human trafficking around the world. To this end, she founded the organization Shared Hope International (SHI), a non-profit association to combat human trafficking for the purpose of prostitution. To this day she is dedicated to the fight against human trafficking and prostitution. She occasionally appears on TV shows to promote her goals.
