George Edward Cole

George Edward Cole (born December 23, 1826 in Trenton Falls , Oneida County , New York , † December 3, 1906 in Portland , Oregon ) was an American politician and from 1866 to 1867 the sixth governor of the Washington Territory .

Early years

George Cole attended local schools in his home country and then the Hobart Hall Institute . After that he was employed in a shop. About Illinois he arrived in 1849, in the gold rush , after California . In 1850 he moved to the Oregon Territory . There he was interested in a wide variety of business areas. For example, he was in the trading business and offered transports on the Willamette River with the help of steamers. In addition, he was also involved in mining and agriculture.

Political career

Between 1852 and 1853 he was a member of the Territorial Parliament of Oregon. From 1859 to 1860 he served as a record clerk in the federal court for the Oregon District. In 1860 he moved to Walla Walla in the Washington Territory. Between March 1863 and March 1865 he represented this area as a delegate to the United States House of Representatives . In November 1866, the Democrat was appointed the new governor of the Washington Territory by US President Andrew Johnson . He held this office for only a few months until March 4, 1867. After his governorship, he moved to Portland, Oregon. There he was involved in railway construction from 1869 to 1872. From 1873 to 1881 he was director of the Portland Post Office. In 1889 he moved to Spokane ; between 1890 and 1892 he was a chamberlain in Spokane County .

After the end of his political career in 1892, Cole returned to his business interests. He died on December 3, 1906, at the age of almost 80.
