Roland Hill Hartley (born June 26, 1864 in New Brunswick , Canada , †  September 21, 1952 in Seattle , Washington ) was an American politician and from 1925 to 1933 the tenth governor of Washington state .

Early years and political advancement

Roland Hartley was born in Canada but grew up in Minnesota . There he got into the timber trade. He then became the private secretary of the Minnesota Governor David Marston Clough . In 1903 he moved to Everett, Washington State, where he was again active in the timber trade. Between 1910 and 1911 he was mayor of this place. From 1915 and 1916 he was a member of the Washington House of Representatives . In 1924 he was elected as the candidate of the Republican Party for the new governor, where he prevailed with 56:32 percent of the vote against the Democrat Ben F. Hill.

Washington governor

Roland Hartley took up his new office on January 12, 1925. After he was confirmed by the electorate in 1928, he could remain in office until January 9, 1933. During this time, a Centralized State Highway Department was created; In addition, the laws regulating forestry were introduced. In 1928 the State Court of Justice ruled that candidates for the Labor Party must also appear on the ballot papers in elections. Hartley's second term was overshadowed by the events of the Great Depression , which also rocked Washington State. In 1931, unemployment rose dramatically in the country. The record was set in 1933 with an unemployment rate of 25 percent. As a result of these circumstances, riots and protest marches broke out. Even Governor Hartley was unable to improve the situation. It was not until later in the 1930s that the situation improved with the help of federal politics and the New Deal program under President Franklin D. Roosevelt .

In 1932 Hartley declined to run again. Four years later he made an unsuccessful attempt to be elected to the office of governor. Then he withdrew from politics. Roland Hartley died in September 1952. He was married to Nina M. Clough, daughter of Minnesota's Governor David Clough. The couple had three children together.
