Michael Edward "Mike" Lowry (born March 8, 1939 in St. John , Whitman County , Washington , † May 1, 2017 in Olympia , Washington) was an American politician . He was the 20th governor of Washington state from 1993 to 1997  .

Early years and political advancement

Mike Lowry attended Washington State University until 1962 after elementary school . Between 1969 and 1973 he served on a Washington Senate committee . From 1975 to 1978 he was a member of the King County county council . In 1978 Lowry was elected to the United States House of Representatives. He held this mandate from 1979 to 1989. He then applied unsuccessfully for a seat in the US Senate . He then lectured at Seattle University until 1992 . In November 1992, Lowry was elected as the Democratic Party candidate for the new governor of Washington.

Washington governor

Lowry took up his four-year term on January 13, 1993, replacing Booth Gardner . As governor, he campaigned for state-wide health insurance, the premiums of which should be based on the individual solvency of the population. In 1996 the State History Museum was opened in Washington State. After being accused of sexual harassment by an employee, Lowry declined to run again in 1996.

After the end of his tenure, Lowry applied unsuccessfully in 2000 for the position of Commissioner of Public Lands for Washington State. He later built inexpensive accommodations for the wandering farm workers. Mike Lowry was married to Mary Carlson, with whom he had a child. He lived in Seattle .
