William Carey Jones

William Carey Jones (born April 5, 1855 in Remsen , Oneida County , New York , †  June 14, 1927 in Spokane , Washington ) was an American politician . Between 1897 and 1899 he represented the state of Washington in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Jones attended public schools in his home country and then West Salem Seminary in Wisconsin . After a subsequent law degree at the University of Wisconsin – Madison and his admission as a lawyer in 1876, he began to work in Madelia ( Minnesota ) in his new profession. In 1882 and 1883 he was also the legal representative of this place. In 1883 Jones moved to the Washington Territory , where he settled in Cheney and worked as the legal representative for that place. From 1887 Jones was based in Spokane. Between 1886 and 1889 he was a prosecutor in the twelfth legal district of the Washington Territory. After Washington State was established, Jones was Attorney General of the new state between 1889 and 1897 .

Politically, Jones was then a member of the Republican Party . Between 1884 and 1894 he took part as a delegate at all regional party conventions in his territory or state. Within his party he belonged to the so-called silver faction, which preferred silver as the currency base. In the state-wide held congressional elections of 1896, Jones was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC for the first mandate of Washington , where he succeeded Samuel C. Hyde on March 4, 1897 . Since he was not confirmed in the elections of 1898, he could only complete one term in Congress until March 3, 1899 . This was shaped by the events of the Spanish-American War . At that time, the Philippines and the Hawaiian Islands came under American administration.

After leaving the US House of Representatives, Jones moved to the Democratic Party . Between 1904 and 1924 he was a delegate at all regional Democratic party conventions in Washington State. During these years he worked as a lawyer again. William Jones died in Spokane on June 14, 1927.
