Thomas Slade Gorton III (born January 8, 1928 in Chicago , Illinois , † August 19, 2020 in Seattle , Washington ) was an American politician ( Republican Party ) who represented the state of Washington in the US Senate .

Early life

Slade Gorton - he is usually called without his first name Thomas - was born in Chicago to Thomas Slade and Ruth Israel Gorton and grew up in Evanston , where he attended compulsory school. Shortly before the end of the Second World War , Gorton was drafted in 1945 and served as a soldier in the US Army until 1946 .

He then continued his education at Dartmouth College in Hanover , New Hampshire , where he graduated in 1950. In 1953, Gorton graduated from Columbia University in New York with a law degree and then began practicing law in Seattle .

From 1953 to 1956 Gorton served with the rank of lieutenant in the US Air Force and was even then a reservist until 1980.

Political career

In 1959 Gorton was elected to the Washington House of Representatives, where he served as Republican majority leader from 1967 to 1969 . In 1969 Gorton was named Attorney General of Washington, an office he held for twelve years.

In 1980, Gorton successfully ran for a seat in the US Senate, where he remained from January 3, 1981 to January 3, 1987. It was Democrat Brockman Adams who defeated Gorton in the Senate seat election. However, he ran again in 1988 and was again able to win a seat in the Senate. Gorton was re-elected in 1994, serving from January 3, 1989 to January 3, 2001.

Late life

In 2002, Gorton member of the commission of inquiry into the attacks of was September 11 that its 2004 final report submitted. In 2005, Gorton took over the chairmanship of the center-right Constitutional Law PAC , which advocates the use of Republican candidates in public offices, but especially in the Federal Court of Washington.

Private life

Gorton was married to Sally Jean Clark since June 28, 1958. The couple has three children, son Tod and daughters Sara Jane and Rebecca Lynn. His wife died seven years before her husband, on July 20, 2013.
