Wesley Livsey Jones (born October 9, 1863 in Bethany , Illinois , † November 19, 1932 in Seattle , Washington ) was an American politician who represented the state of Washington in both chambers of Congress .

Youth and education

All that is known about Wesley Livsey Jones 'family is that his father, Wesley Jones, died a few days before Jones' birth as a soldier in the Civil War . His mother, Phoebe McKay, later remarried.

Wesley Jones, born and raised on a farm in Moultrie County , attended compulsory school there and graduated from Southern Illinois College in Enfield in 1885 . One of his classmates was William Edgar Borah , Senator from Idaho from 1907 to 1940 . After a year of private law studies , Jones was admitted to the bar in 1886 and shortly thereafter was employed in Decatur , Illinois. After three years working in Illinois, Jones moved to Yakima , Washington in 1889 , where he was also able to gain a foothold in his profession.

Political career

Republican Jones began his political career in 1898 when he was elected to the United States House of Representatives for Washington . Jones' term began on March 4, 1899 and ended after four successful re-elections on March 3, 1909. He had been elected Senator of the United States by 1908, so he took office just one day after he left Congress on March 4. March 1909.

Jones was a senator for over two decades and served on numerous boards and committees during his tenure.

In the last few years of his tenure, Jones was sick several times. The world economic crisis , but also prohibition , made the republican difficult. In early November 1932, Jones lost the election to another Republican, Homer Bone , which was also a heavy blow for him. Just ten days after the election, Jones died in Seattle at the age of 69. Elijah S. Grammer held the office until Senator Bone was sworn in .

He left behind his wife Minda, with whom he had been married since 1885, and their two children.
