Emerson Hugh De Lacy (born May 9, 1910 in Seattle , Washington , †  August 19, 1986 in Soquel , California ) was an American politician . Between 1945 and 1947 he represented the state of Washington in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Hugh De Lacy first attended the Queen Anne Public School and then studied until 1932 at the University of Washington in Seattle. He then taught English at this university between 1933 and 1937. Between 1937 and 1940 he was a member of the Seattle City Council. From 1940 to 1944 he worked as a machinist at a shipyard in Seattle. At that time he also published the monthly journal Bulletin of Machinists Union .

Politically, De Lacy was a member of the Democratic Party . In the 1944 congressional elections, he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the first constituency of Washington state , where he succeeded Warren G. Magnuson on January 3, 1945 . Since he was defeated by the Republican Homer Jones in the 1946 elections, he could only serve one term in Congress until January 3, 1947 . During this time the Second World War ended . De Lacy was a member of the Maritime Affairs Committee. He was against the abolition of the price controls practiced during the war and against the establishment of the committee for un-American activities . As a result, his opponents called him a friend of the communists.

After leaving the US House of Representatives, De Lacy moved to the United States Midwest. Between 1948 and 1950 he headed the Progressive Party in Ohio . From 1951 to 1958 he worked as a carpenter in Cleveland . He then moved to Los Angeles , where he managed a contract company in the construction industry until 1967. In 1975, at the invitation of the Chinese government, he toured the People's Republic of China in recognition of the services he had gained in improving bilateral relations.

DeLacy had two brothers: Allan C. De Lacy, longtime professor of fisheries at the University of Washington, and Phillip DeLacy , an eminent Greekist. Hugh De Lacy died in Soquel on August 19, 1986.
