Julia Butler Hansen (born June 14, 1907 in Portland , Oregon , †  May 3, 1988 in Cathlamet , Washington ) was an American politician . Between 1960 and 1975 she represented the state of Washington in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Julia Carolina Butler, her maiden name, attended public schools in the states of Washington and Oregon. Between 1924 and 1926 she graduated from Oregon State College . She then studied at the University of Washington in Seattle until 1930 . Politically, she became a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1938 and 1946 she sat on the town council of Cathlamet; from 1951 to 1961 she headed the national committee responsible for the west, which dealt with the highways ( Western Interstate Committee on Highway Policies ). Between 1958 and 1961 she worked as a manager for an insurance company.

From January 1939 to November 1960, Julia Hansen was a member of the Washington House of Representatives . She acted as President of the House between 1955 and 1960. After the death of Russell V. Mack in March 1960, she was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC when the by-election was due for the third seat in Washington State. There she took her seat from November 8, 1960. After it was confirmed in the following six regular elections, it could remain in Congress until December 31, 1974 . During this time she was temporarily a member of the Budget Committee, the Education, Labor and Veterans Committee, as well as the Interior Committee and the Committee on Island Affairs. During her tenure in the US House of Representatives, the 23rd , 24th , 25th and 26th amendments were passed. The Vietnam War and the Watergate Affair also fell during this period .

For the 1974 elections, Hansen decided not to run again. She resigned on December 31, 1974, four days before the regular end of the legislative period on January 3, 1975, her mandate. Between 1975 and 1981 she was a member of the Washington State Toll Bridge Authority , which set tolls for bridges. She was also a member of her home state's motorway committee. From 1979 to 1981 she was chair of the Washington State Transportation Commission. Julia Hansen was married to Henry Hansen, who worked in the wood industry. She died on May 3, 1988 in Cathlamet.
