Andreas "Andi" Katz (born January 8, 1988 ) is a German cross-country skier .
Career
Katz, who joined SV Baiersbronn at an early age , competed in low-class FIS races from 2005 , mostly only with German participation, in which he achieved second place as the best result. After two starts at the Junior World Championships in 2007 and 2008, he made his breakthrough in the 2009/10 season. In May 2009 the man from Baiersbronn was accepted into the German B-squad together with five other juniors, so that in December of that year he was able to compete in the World Cup for the first time in Düsseldorf . In his first two competitions in this series, he placed in the back of the field. Shortly thereafter, the German national coach Jochen Behle Katz nominated for the Tour de Ski 2009/2010 , in which the athlete should complete a maximum of the first four races and then drop out. In the prologue of the stage race, he showed a surprisingly strong performance, finished eleventh and at the same time fulfilled part of the norm that was sufficient for qualifying for the Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver . After this good first appearance, the German fell far behind in the ranking and ended the tour as planned after the first half. On January 16, Katz was the only DSV athlete to take part in the World Cup in Otepää , where he was now placed fifth and finally took 20th position. Another success this winter was winning the bronze medal at the U23 World Championships in Hinterzarten . Only the Romanian Paul Constantin Pepene and the Norwegian Ole-Marius Bach were better there. After the race, Katz, who had only just missed the silver medal by 0.5 seconds, declared that "bronze is worth gold for [him]". In the Alpine Cup he made it onto the podium five times during the season and took his first Alpine Cup victory in Campra . At the end of the season he took third place in the overall Alpine Cup ranking. At the beginning of the following season he won the 10 km freestyle at the Alpine Cup in St. Ulrich am Pillersee . This was followed by three starts in world cup races, with 30th place in the ski athlon in Rybinsk being his best place. At the U23 World Championships in 2011 in Otepää, he achieved 14th place in the skiathlon and seventh place over 15 km freestyle. In February 2011 he won the Alpencup in Campra and finished the season in tenth place in the overall ranking of the Alpencup. At the beginning of the 2011/12 season he achieved 70th place at the Nordic Opening in Kuusamo . In the further course of the season he came second in the Alpine Cup twice and reached fifth place in the overall standings. He ended the Tour de Ski 2011/12 prematurely. At the German Cross-Country Ski Championships in 2012 , he came second over 30 km.
In the 2012/13 season Katz took 62nd place at the Nordic Opening in Kuusamo and 38th place at the Tour de Ski . His best season result in the Alpine Cup was 11th place over 15 km classic in Goms . After finishing 52nd at the World Cup in Davos over 30 km freestyle at the beginning of the 2013/14 season, he started the Alpencup and achieved his best season single result in the Alpencup in March 2014 in Valdidentro with third place in the pursuit. In Oberwiesenthal he won together with Staffel. At the German Cross-Country Championships in 2014 he was champion over 10 km classic and in the 15 km mass start race. In the 2014/15 season he finished in the top ten three times in the Alpine Cup. Fifth place in the 30 km mass start race in Rogla was his best result. He finished the 2016 Tour de Ski in 16th place. He achieved his first top ten placement in the World Cup individual with eighth place in the 15 km mass start race in Oberstdorf . At the German cross-country skiing championships in Oberwiesenthal in 2017 , he was second in the 50 km freestyle and together with Josua Strübel in the team sprint.
In the 2017/18 season, Katz came 31st in the Ruka Triple and 27th in the 2017/18 Tour de Ski . At the 2018 Olympic Games in Pyeongchang , Katz took part in three competitions and achieved the 14th place over 50 km in classic style as the best place . The following season he finished 29th at the Tour de Ski 2018/19 and 38th at the World Cup final in Québec . His best placings at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2019 in Seefeld in Tirol were 13th place over 15 km classic and sixth place with the relay.
Katz is a sports soldier in the Bundeswehr .
