Paul Constantin Pepene (born May 21, 1988 in Brașov , Brașov County ) is a Romanian cross-country skier .

Career

Paul Constantin Pepene lives in Măgura and starts for CS Dinamo Brașov. He contested his first international race in December 2005 at the Slavic Cup in Horní Mísečky ( Giant Mountains ), in classical style he was 18, in the freestyle race eleventh. The following January he took part in the Junior World Championships for the first time with moderate success , the best place was 53rd place in the double pursuit , in 2007 it was already 22nd in the same competition and 18th in the 10 km freestyle race. The first FIS races followed at the end March and at the Balkan Cup in Uludağ Pepene achieved his first podium finish when he was third over 15 kilometers in free style. January 2008 was particularly successful when he took the podium six times in a row in the Balkan Cup and won his first victory in the 15 km freestyle race in Cheile Grădiştei Fundata . The Junior World Championship in 2008 brought him 15th place twice. In March he achieved his first podium finish in an FIS race, over 10 km classic he only had to admit defeat to Ukrainian Mykola Kryvchenko in talk . Several races in the Balkan and Alpine Cup followed , until he made his first appearance at a Nordic World Ski Championships in Liberec in 2009. 55th place (30 km pursuit) and 64th place (15 km classic) were his best results. In March 2009, he was on the top step of the podium six times in seven consecutive races and came second once. Two wins in the Balkan Cup were followed by two wins at the Macedonian Championships in Kruševo and, at the end of the series, his first victory at an FIS race, again in Gerede / Bolu . In summer 2009 he started roller-skiing competitions and was active again in FIS races, Slavic Cup and Alpine Cup from December, he was in the top ten in all nine races up to the 2010 Junior World Championships, including two victories. The competitions in Hinterzarten brought Pepene's first great success, he started in the U-23 age group. After 52nd place in the sprint qualification and 23rd place over 15 km classic, he managed a surprising victory in the 30 km double pursuit. In the classic section he was always in the top group, in the freestyle section he pulled away from his pursuers after a total of 22 km and won the race by a clear margin.

Pepene was nominated as one of three cross-country skiers by the Romanian National Olympic Committee for the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver 2010. In the Whistler Olympic Park he competed in three competitions, first he reached 37th place over 15 km freestyle and then 29th place in the double pursuit. He achieved the best result together with the 18-year-old Petrică Hogiu in the team sprint, the two finished seventeenth in the victory of the duo Øystein Pettersen / Petter Northug . Pepene closed the 2009/2010 season with two wins at the Balkan Cup in Erzurum . His best placement at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oslo in 2011 was 35th in the 30 km pursuit. In November 2011 he ran his first World Cup race in Sjusjøen , which he finished with 68th place over 15 km freestyle. In the 2011/12 season he was able to win six races and the overall standings at the Balkan Cup. He got his first World Cup point in Sochi in February 2013 when he finished 30th in the skiathlon. His best placings at the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2013 in Val di Fiemme were 41st place in the 30 km skiathlon and 18th place in the team sprint. In summer 2013 he won the silver medal in the 11 km mass start race at the Rollerski World Championships 2013 in Bad Peterstal . At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, 47th place in the 30 km skiathlon and 18th place in the team sprint were his best results. In the 2014/15 season he won six races of the Balkan Cup and won the overall cup standings for the fifth time. His best results at the 2015 Nordic World Ski Championships in Falun were 33rd in the skiathlon and 17th in the team sprint. In September 2015 he won the Rollerski World Cup in mountain running in Trentino and finished fourth in the 25 km mass start race at the Rollerski World Championships in Fiemme Valley . In the 2015/16 season he took 37th place at the Nordic Opening in Ruka and 35th place at the 2016 Tour de Ski . His best results of the season in the World Cup were 18th place in the skiathlon in Lillehammer and ninth place in the final stage of the Tour de Ski. In January 2016 he won the Balkancup in Gerede over 5 km classic and over 10 km freestyle and in February 2016 he won second place in the pursuit race at the Alpencup in Campra TI . He finished the season in 81st place in the overall World Cup and fifth in the overall ranking of the Balkan Cup. The following season he finished 33rd in the World Cup mini tour in Lillehammer and in the Tour de Ski 2016/17 . At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2017 in Lahti , he finished 52nd in the sprint, 41st in the skiathlon and 29th in the 50 km mass start race.

In 2018 Pepene took part in his third Olympic Games . In Pyeongchang he was 24th in the skiathlon, 32nd over 50 km in classic style and 37th over 15 km in free style. At the 2019 Nordic World Ski Championships in Seefeld in Tyrol , he ran on 41st place over 15 km classic and 40th Rank in skiathlon .
