Pale ( Serbian - Cyrillic Пале ) is a place in the east of Bosnia and Herzegovina , about 20 kilometers east of Sarajevo in the Romanija region . Today it is part of the city of Istočno Sarajevo . It is a city in the Republika Srpska , one of the two entities of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which was created after the Bosnian War and has expanded significantly since then .
In Pale there is a site of the Istočno Sarajevo University and the Church of the Assumption of Our Lady .
history
In 1904 Pale received a station on the newly built Bosnian Eastern Railway , which ran from Sarajevo to Višegrad . This was to the west of the actual place. In 1974 the train service was stopped; the stretch from Pale to the south-east, including the tunnel at Stambolčić, was converted into a road.
During the Bosnian War , Pale was the capital of the Republika Srpska until it was moved to Banja Luka . The bombardment and siege of Sarajevo was organized from Pale . During this time, the basic expansion of the place began, which, however, largely came to a standstill after 1996. It is still considered a stronghold of Serb nationalists today.
After the war, a small part of the municipality was incorporated into the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (today's municipality of Pale-Prača ), while Pale itself remained with the Republika Srpska.
population
In 1991 the municipality of Pale had 16,355 inhabitants; 69% of them described themselves as Serbs , 27% as Bosniaks and 4% as members of other ethnic groups. The place Pale itself had 7384 inhabitants, of which 70.5% Serbs and 22% Bosniaks.
Of the 69 smaller towns in the municipality, 50 had a Serbian and 19 a Bosniak majority. There were only a few places with a mixed population. An exception was the town of Prača (50.5% Serbs; 49% Bosniaks), which was badly affected by the effects of the war and is now the capital of the municipality of Pale-Prača in the BiH Federation.
The population of the municipality rose to around 30,000 by 2005, but is now again just over 22,000.
Sports
Just south of Pale is the famous Jahorina ski area , one of the most important venues for the 1984 Winter Olympics . In 2017 the first East Timorese Alpine Ski Championship took place here.
