About this picture

Sanski Most ( Cyrillic  Сански Мост ) is a small town and the administrative seat of the municipality of the same name ( općina ) in the canton of Una-Sana in northwestern Bosnia and Herzegovina .

geography

The city is located on the middle reaches of the Sana in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina . Since Sanski Most is also located on the Sana tributaries Sanica , Dabar , Bliha, Japra, Zdena, Majdanska Rijeka, Sasinka and Kozica, it is also called the “city on nine rivers” ( grad na devet rijeka ). The municipality is located in the Bosanska Krajina region . Sanski Most borders in the west on the large municipalities Bosanska Krupa , Bosanski Petrovac , in the south on Ključ , and in the north and east on the Općina Oštra Luka , which formerly also belonged to the territory of the large municipality Sanski Most, but through the Treaty of Dayton after the Bosnian War came to Republika Srpska .

To the west and southwest of Sanski Most is the Grmeč mountain range , to the east are the Mulež and Behramaginica mountains .

traffic

Until 1975, Sanski Most had a station on the narrow-gauge stone ice railway from Prijedor to Lička Kaldrma and Jajce .

Attractions

The main attractions of the municipality are the mosque in the city center and the old bridge over the Sana, which gave the city its name.

In the small villages bordering Sanski Most (Pobrijezje, Novo naselje, Hrustovo, Tomina, Vrhpolje, Kamengrad, Kruhari) and the surrounding area there are other sights such as the Hrustovačka cave , the Sanica spring or the Banjica waterfalls. There are many cafes and restaurants on the banks of the Sana.

Second World War

During the Second World War , the region belonged to the Independent State of Croatia (NDH). During this period, the Sanski Most massacre occurred , in which up to 5,500 Serbs and 40 to 50 Jews were murdered in 1941 . The massacre was carried out mainly by the Croatian-fascist Ustasha , but also by Bosnian-Muslim militias.

Non-governmental organizations

Since 1998 the aid organization Krajiška Suza, originally founded as a women's self-help group after the war in Yugoslavia in 1996, has been providing medical care and social work with low-income people in Sanski Most and the surrounding area.

The Center for Peacebuilding CIM tries to reconcile the once warring population groups with the help of local events, youth camps and international encounters.
