Vukašin Brajić , Vuki or Wookee, (born February 9, 1984 in Sanski Most , SFR Yugoslavia ; today Bosnia and Herzegovina ) is a Bosnian - Serbian pop / rock musician who became known through the talent show Operacija Trijumf .

He represented Bosnia and Herzegovina at the Eurovision Song Contest 2010 in Oslo with the song Thunder and Lightning .

Childhood and musical beginnings

Vukašin was born as the eldest child of Simeun and Dušanka Brajić. He has two younger siblings, Nenad and Nevena. During the Bosnian War , his family fled to Serbia. There they first settled in Mali Požarevac near Sopot , where they lived for a year. The Brajić family then moved to Čačak , where they still live today.

In Čačak, Brajić also completed elementary school and then high school. From the third grade on, he also attended music school. During school he sang in the choir, learned to dance in the "Luna" dance school and was a member of his school's theater club.

At 19 he moved from Čačak to Negotin , attended an academy for prospective teachers and played in the metal band Affect. The band did not succeed, however, but he dropped out of his studies in 2007 and moved to Belgrade to advance his musical career. There he had a promo single produced with his band , but that was unsuccessful, so they separated at the end of 2007. Vukašin Brajić tried his hand at Marko Marić in the duo Lucky Luke .

Operacija Trijumf

Vukašin's participation in Operacija Trijumf, the edition of Fame Academy hosted by the Serbian TV broadcaster B92 , with participants from the Western Balkans (excluding Albania), began when his roommate at the time told him that the casting show was in his town. He took singing lessons from his remaining money. The show began on September 29, 2008. He reached the finals and reached second place behind the winner Adnan Babajić with around 330,000 votes . Brajić represented the Republika Srpska at the Operacija Trijumf .

During the show, Vukašin stood out above all for his performance, which earned him a lot of praise from the jury. Since the event was broadcast in all former Yugoslav states, it was also important that the audience from all participating countries could identify with. Some even referred to him as "the man who reunified all the states of the former Yugoslavia".

Success with OT Bend

Second place at the casting show gave the singer a place in the test tube band OT Bend , which also includes his former opponents at Operacija Trijumf, Nikola Paunović, Nikola Sarić and Đorđe Gogov. The band released an album and gave several concerts. A special highlight was a performance on February 23, 2009, when OT Bend opened a concert by British folk musician James Blunt in front of 2,000 fans in Belgrade.

OT Bend competed in 2009 with the rock song Blagoslov za kraj (English: blessing at the end ) in the Serbian preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest , called Beovizija . The quartet started with the singer Katarina "Kaja" Ostojić as support, but narrowly failed: Although the four received the most votes in the televoting , the jury rated them so negatively that they only ended up in second place.

After that, the band received various awards and toured Europe. Among other things, the Universiade 2009 in Belgrade played in front of around 10,000 people.

Solo performance at the Eurovision Song Contest 2010

On January 11, 2010 it was announced that Vukašin Brajić will represent Bosnia-Herzegovina at the Eurovision Song Contest 2010 (ESC) in Oslo with the song Thunder and Lightning by Edin-Dino Šaran. As is usual in many countries, there was no preliminary decision in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Brajić was selected by a group of experts.

The election of Brajić as representative of Bosnia aroused astonishment in some sections of the population. Brajić is a Bosnian Serb, but has lived in Serbia from childhood, where his musical career is also well founded. He speaks and sings in the Ekavian dialect , which is characteristic of Serbia. Previously, his rival Adnan Babajić, who emerged victorious at Operacija Trijumf and is a Bosniak, was traded as a potential representative of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Babajić made several negative statements in the ex-Yugoslav press on the election of Brajić.

Some Bosniak media also campaigned to discredit Brajić. The Bosniak press asked the diaspora to sabotage Vukašin while televoting. It was often criticized that his family had left Bosnia and Herzegovina during the war years and fled to Serbia, that he speaks the Serbian dialect and is perceived by the Bosnian population not as “Bosnians” but as “Serbs”. However, since Brajić has both Bosnian and Serbian citizenship, he meets the admission criteria for both countries. For the EBU, the origin of the performers and composers is irrelevant. However, the participating broadcasters are free to choose which method to use to select the participants. As a rule, some countries pay attention to the origin of the composer, since the Eurovision Song Contest is a composers' competition.

According to Marco Lambrecht from NDR , the title has a "rough charm". On May 25, 2010 Brajić appeared in Oslo in the first ESC semi-final and reached the final, which was held on May 29. There he finished 17th with 51 points. He only got the full score of 12 points from Serbia.
