The Beovizija ( Serbian - Cyrillic Беовизија ) is a music festival in Serbia , which serves as the national preliminary decision for Serbia's representatives in the Eurovision Song Contest .

history

Beovizija is organized by the public service broadcaster RTS and is broadcast on national television, via satellite and online. The event takes place in February or March in the large hall of the Sava Centar with a capacity of 4,000 people or in the studios of RTS on Košutnjak in Belgrade .

The first Beovizija took place in 2003. Here Toše Proeski won with the song Čija Si . However, since Serbia-Montenegro did not take part in the Eurovision Song Contest at the time, the title was not submitted to the EBU. After the country had been excluded from the singing competition for 12 years due to the sanctions, the state union of Serbia and Montenegro entered again for the first time in 2004.

Initially it was planned that Beovizija should determine the representative for Serbia and Montenegro at the ESC. However, it was later agreed that RTS and RTCG should each send an equal number of participants to the joint final. Therefore, the Beovizija acted as the Serbian semi-final, while the Montenegrin semi-final was called Montevizija . In the final Evropesma (Evropjesma) the best placed participants of both festivals then appeared.

After Montenegro left the confederation in 2006, the Beovizija has been a purely Serbian competition since 2007. In the same year the rating system was reformed and the influence of the jury relativized. Now the televoting and the jury evaluation were included in the evaluation in equal parts.

At the Beovizija it was natural that the Eurovision participants from the other former Yugoslav republics act as Interval Acts.

After 2009 the Beovizija was no longer organized because of the economic crisis in order to keep the costs of participation in the ESC as low as possible. The Serbian radio announced in January 2018 that the Beovizija will be reorganized after nine years and will appoint the Serbian representative for the ESC in the future. In 2019, for the first time in the history of the festival, there were two semi-finals and a grand final.
