The Sava Centar ( Serbian - Cyrillic Сава центар ) is an international convention center in Belgrade , the capital of Serbia . With 4,000 seats, it has the largest auditorium (auditorium or lecture hall) in the country and of all the former states of Yugoslavia . In addition to the Great Hall , the conference center offers a further 14 lecture halls with 80 to 1000 seats and modern infrastructure for congresses and other large events ( conference offices , telecommunications and information technology , exhibition areas, press center , etc.) as well as translation systems for 8 languages.

Since its opening in 1979, the Sava Congress Center has hosted numerous major congresses , important political conferences and regular cultural events, including around 20 pan-European congresses from medicine, technology and natural sciences, the 2008 Song Contest and all of the 18 annual meetings of the TELFOR organization for Southeast Europe to date .

Location and building history

The Sava Centar is located in the Novi Beograd district near the Sava River, which gives it its name . The old city center with the historical fortress of Belgrade is only about 1 km away, the international airport about 15 km.

Construction of the congress center began in 1976, but it was preceded by a long planning period. The design comes from the architect Stojan Maksimović , who was also the manager of the entire construction project.

At the end of 1979 the construction work was finished and the convention center opened with the annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) .

Conference halls and infrastructure

Great Hall

The Sava Centar has a floor area of ​​69,720 m². Building A contains the majority of the conference rooms, while Building B mainly contains the Great Hall (or "Blue Hall") with 3,700 seats and a 7-channel translation system; In the foyer in front of the hall there is space for over 4,000 people, for whom there are bars, information tables, seating and a winter garden.

The second largest hall, Hall 1A / 1B, is designed for around 1,000 visitors, but can be divided into 2 or 3 halls. The building complex contains a further 13 conference halls for 80 to around 250 people, a press center for 900 people, large exhibition areas, some lounges for receptions and all the necessary ancillary rooms. A luxury hotel for well-heeled participants and state guests is also connected.

Major congresses

The Sava Centar hosted the OSCE programs , the annual meeting of the IMF and the World Bank , the main meeting of UNESCO and the ninth meeting of the non-aligned countries and other political conferences .

Major scientific conferences since 2001 have been around 20 pan-European congresses from medicine, technology and natural sciences as well as all of the previous 18 annual meetings of the TELFOR organization for Southeastern Europe.

The center is also very active in the fields of art and culture; u. a. International music and dance events as well as the 2008 Song Contest took place here.
