Proeski stood out when he performed with a friend at the children's festival “Zlatno Slavejce” (“Golden Nightingale”).

Proeski had his first major public appearances as a professional singer in 1996 and 1997 when he took part in the “Melfest” in Prilep , a festival for young people, where he took first place twice in a row. There he stood out for his vocal abilities. In 1997 Proeski took part in the “Makfest” in Štip with the song Pusti me (“Let me”) . His fan base grew rapidly and he used various festivals to make his songs known. He also worked with Macedonia's most famous songwriter and composer, Grigor Koprov. Some of his greatest hits like Usni na Usni ("Lips on Lips") and Sonce vo Tvoite Rusi Kosi ("The sun on your blond hair") emerged from it. His first album Nekade vo Noćta ("Somewhere in the night") was released in 1999.

2000 Proeski again took part in the national pre-selection round for the Eurovision Song Contest. His song Solzi pravat zlaten prsten ("Tears make a golden ring") received the most phone calls, but ended up "only" in third place. In June of the same year the second album was released: Sinot Božji (“God's Son”).

At the height of your career

He achieved his breakthrough in what was then Serbia and Montenegro and thus the first step beyond the borders of Macedonia through appearances at the “ Sunčane Skale ” festival, the most famous music festival in Montenegro . His first big success in Serbia was Vo kosi da ti spijam (“To fall asleep on your hair”), still sung in Macedonian. When it became clear that Proeski could also gain a foothold in Serbia, one of the then largest Serbian record companies signed “BK Sound”: After a positive response, he also recorded his following albums in Serbian. The duet Nemir (“Unrest”) with Karolina Gočeva was also set to music in Serbian under the title Pomozi mi (“Help me”), which was also the first step towards a great career for Gočeva. The winning song of " Beovizija 2003" - Čija si ("Who do you belong to") is often named as his biggest hit . The song was written by the singer Leontina Vukomanović. He also worked with the most successful Serbian text writer Marina Tucaković . In 2001 he was able to give a concert in the sold out Sava Centar in Belgrade . The last big concert took place on Valentine's Day 2007 in the Belgrade Arena .

He became famous in Croatia when he sang the theme song of the soap opera Zabranjena ljubav ("Forbidden Love") with the title Srce nije haben ("The heart is not a stone"). The singer and actress Antonija Šola sang the duet Volim osmjeh tvoj (“I love your smile”) with him and also wrote some other songs for his last album. He also recorded a successful duet with Toni Cetinski: Lagala nas mala (“The little one lied to us”). In 2007 he was the first foreign interpreter to win the “Hrvatski Radijski Festival” with the title Veži me za sebe (“ Bind me to you”).

In Slovenia he sang the duet Krajnje vrijeme with the singer Anja Rupel .

In 2006 he gave a free concert in the city hall of Sarajevo Zetra in Bosnia-Herzegovina . In 2006 he was awarded the prestigious “Davorin” prize as the best artist in the region.

Proeski was considered one of the few artists who were equally successful in all of the successor states of Yugoslavia. He was also able to successfully market his albums in Bulgaria .

After a tour through Australia, the third album Ako me pogledneš vo oči / Ako me pogledaš u oči (title of the Serbo-Croatian version of the album) (“When you look me in the eye”) was created in 2002 .

Proeski took singing lessons in New York to further improve his voice. His teacher was William Riley, who also worked with Luciano Pavarotti . After his return, Toše gave numerous charity concerts. For this he was awarded the “Mother Teresa Prize” and has been a UNICEF ambassador since 2003 . In his hometown of Kruševo he financed the renovation of an Orthodox monastery. He also took part in an awareness- raising project run by the Macedonian AIDS aid organization. He gave numerous charity concerts for a Skopje children's clinic.

In 2004 Proeski was selected to represent Macedonia at the Eurovision Song Contest in Istanbul . His song Angel Si Ti ("You are an angel") was chosen by the audience and himself. At the contest he performed the English version of Life of this song and thus reached 14th place.

His two following albums were released all over ex-Yugoslavia. Po Tebe / Pratim te (title of the Serbo-Croatian version of the album) (“I follow you”) was one of the most successful albums and topped the charts in Macedonia, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia and Bosnia-Herzegovina for months.

His work Božilak ("Rainbow") contained 14 selected traditional Macedonian songs. He was supported by a symphony orchestra.

The last album of his career with the title Igri Bez Granici / Igra Bez Granica (Serbo-Croatian title of the album) ("Games without borders") was released in August 2007.

Proeski also made a name for himself as a songwriter. He wrote many of his numerous successful hits himself. According to his own account, he wrote over 100 songs. He said he wanted to wait with many of them for the right moment to publish them.

An album in English should have been released shortly, which was intended for the international market. Seven songs had already been recorded. The first single was Aria , a duet with Gianna Nannini, which was first presented at a concert in Belgrade on February 14, 2007. It is still unclear whether the recorded songs will ever be published commercially.

Toše Proeski had an older sister. His partner was handball player Andrijana Budimir .

Immediately after Proeski's death was announced, people gathered in the central squares in Macedonia. They cried, lit candles in memory of him, brought flowers, stuffed animals, posters, etc. Parliament observed an official minute's silence and then interrupted its work. Both the President and the Prime Minister took positions on the disaster and offered condolences. The television stations in Macedonia interrupted their programs and reported continuously about the accident; they showed audience surveys in which the deep concern of the population became clear.

October 17th (burial day) has been declared a day of national mourning in Macedonia. Proeski was buried with all state and church honors. His colleagues Nikola Rokvić, Bisera Veletanlić, Dušan Svilar and many others left flower greetings and signed the book. In Zagreb, many citizens and colleagues also took the opportunity to send Proeski a final greeting, including Boris Novković . A delegation of the German Bundestag, consisting of the members Günter Baumann (CDU), Klaus Hagemann (SPD), Jens Ackermann (FDP) and Josef Winkler (Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen), who happened to be in Macedonia for talks with parliament and the government, condoled the relatives in writing in the name of the German Bundestag and personally signed the condolence book in Skopje.

On December 15, 2007, the Macedonian Post published a special postage stamp with Todor's motif. In 2011, a new memorial specially built for him was inaugurated in his place of residence, Kruševo . be right

"The others spread the aggression, Proeski did the opposite - he spreads the love" ( Branko Crvenkovski , President of Macedonia)

“When asked what made Proeski's success in all of ex-Yugoslavia, the Skopj concert organizer Vladimir Mandicevski said there was a large audience segment for which turbo folk was too primitive, local rock 'n' roll too elitist and electronic music too exotic be. Proeski's music is catchy, but not without a level. He also had an above-average voice for this music genre. The fact that Toše neither provoked scandals nor allowed himself to be politically involved helped him with his cross-border success - especially since national borders hardly play a role in popular musical culture .
