Nova Gradiška ( German Neugradiska or Neu-Gradisca , formerly Friedrichsdorf , Hungarian Újgradiska ) is a small town in eastern Croatia with 14,229 inhabitants (2011 census), located about ten kilometers north of the Save River . It was founded in 1748 as a soldier settlement of the Slavonian Border Infantry Regiment No. 8 (Gradiskaner) within the Habsburg military border . The border settlement was initially named after the first regimental leader Friedrich Schmidt, Friedrichsdorf . In 1750 the settlement was renamed "Nova Gradiska". The city developed very quickly from a military garrison to a silk breeding center and later a center of handicrafts and trade. It has a baroque town center and is also called the youngest city in Croatia . The city name refers to the early modern fortress Stara Gradiška (Old Gradiška), about 20 kilometers southwest, directly on the northern bank of the Sava at the border crossing to Bosnia-Herzegovina . Opposite is the town of Gradiška .

Nova Gradiška was one of the first electrified cities in Croatia. The furniture industry is one of the local export-oriented companies, and its Stjepan Sekulić brand goods are sold in many European countries. Furthermore, the agricultural industry is very developed. For example, malt is produced for Belgian breweries.

The two baroque churches in the town center are worth seeing for tourists. In addition, despite its small size, the city offers a parade in which you can find various shops and many cafes. In addition to a gallery, the city's museum is worth seeing.

Festivals

  • Novogradiško glazbeno ljeto (music summer in Nova Gradiška) takes place annually as the largest festival.
  • Motociklistički susreti (motorcycle meeting) takes place annually in the nearby Strmac recreational area.

traffic

The A3 motorway and the Zagreb – Belgrade railway line form the Pan-European Transport Corridor No. 10 . It is also possible to continue from here to Požega (Croatia) and to the nearby border to Bosnia-Herzegovina.

economy

The Yugoslav war of the 1990s destroyed many branches of industry. Today there is no more metallurgy industry (once the largest employer). The factories that work today are only a shadow of themselves compared to the past. Today there are only parts of the timber industry and the newly added beer industry . This is why the big Industrie Park initiative is being successfully advanced.
