history

On December 20, 1895, the government decided that the place that was previously called Svinjar will be called Davor from April 1, 1896. The name Svinjar is derived from the Croatian word "svinja" (= pig) and sounds rather derogatory. This could have been the reason for the name change. There are two explanations for the origin of the name Davor:

The first explanation comes from Slavic mythology , in which a god is called Before. However, the probability of the origin of the name Davor from this mythology is classified as low, because the Slavic mythology did not reach the Croatians in depth. In addition, the myth about the deity Davor itself is controversial, so that it is possible that no one in the village knew him (it can be assumed that the initiative to change the name came from the village itself).

The second explanation is that the name before is derived from the before. These are patriotic poems that were written in the 1830s during the time of Ljudevit Gaj , the Illyrian movement and the awakening of the national consciousness of the South Slav peoples . In addition to the Croats , the Serbs and Slovenes also know such poems.
