history

The oldest surviving documents on Staro Petrovo Selo date back to the late Middle Ages (13th-16th centuries). The village was first called Petrović selo ('Petrović village'), then Mitrović selo (or Mitrovo selo for 'Mitars village' - Mitar is a local short form of the name Demeter / Dimitri). During the time of Empress Maria Theresa (1740–1780), the villagers were relocated from the mountains to the valley, along the restored old Roman road. The reason for this was the pushing back of the Ottomans over the river Sava. The villagers should now protect the border from the Ottomans (see military border ). That is why the villagers who were settled on the restored Roman road were given the nickname "Graničari" (read 'Granitschari' = border guards). This brings about a network of several villages to form Staro Petrovo Selo.
