Personalities

sons and daughters of the town

Significant personalities born in Garčin include Bishop Antun Akšamović and the famous Croatian historian Vjekoslav Klaić , after whom the elementary school and folklore group got their name. Antun Akšamović was appointed bishop of Djakov in 1970. On the 50th anniversary of his appointment, the stone carver Ivan Germovšek made a memorial plaque, which is located at the rectory in Garčin.

education

The first elementary school in Garčin was founded in 1714. The first teacher was Ferdinand Klaić , the grandfather of Vjekoslav Klaić. After a new education law appeared in 1765, a so-called trivial school was also active in Garčin. Classes lasted three years and were only suitable for boys. The main subject was German and only children of German origin were allowed to attend this school. However, the education system changed over time. From 1830 girls were allowed to attend school and from 1839 there were two schools in Garčin: the elementary school - which lasted five years and only children from Garčin, Sapci, Selna and Bicko Selo were allowed to attend, and the trivial school - that for children from the Area was suitable. After the Second World War, elementary school lasted eight years, which has not changed to this day.

Others

Thanks to the Church of St. Matthew (Sveti Matej), Garčin is also a parish center where the Vjekoslav Klai elementary school , folklore group, hunting and football club and the Garčin Volunteer Fire Brigade are of great importance. The community center, which is suitable for various events, the post office, the registry office and the ambulance show only part of the overall picture of today's Garčin.
