Funeral speech

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The eulogy (also grave speech or funeral oration , outdated Parentation ) is an important part of the secular funeral . Funeral speeches can be written and presented by the bereaved themselves or by friends or acquaintances.

The funeral sermon was a special ecclesiastical funeral speech . As a memento , eulogies were also printed and distributed. Printed obituaries are known as necrologists .

history

Today's funeral speech goes back to the church tradition of the funeral speech. In late antiquity, this was mainly reserved for high-ranking personalities and their relatives. An essential forerunner of the funeral speech was the eulogy . The enkomion continues its tradition in the funeral speech. It was only after the Reformation that the funeral sermon developed , which was initially imitated by the bourgeoisie as a standing speech and then as a funeral oration .

species

The funeral speech can be held during the funeral service or exclusively at the grave. It is non-denominational, but can be religious, philosophical or ideological. The funeral oration is usually not church-oriented. Secular speeches mainly refer to special stages in the life of the deceased and honor their personality and are also given by the funeral orators. At funeral ceremonies, it may well be desirable that a family member also gives a speech or a colleague from the work company, company, association or club does so.

The funeral speeches also include the funeral speeches, which are held at official commemorative events in politics, business and society before or after the actual funeral. The following are mentioned:

preparation

The funeral orator conducts a preliminary talk with the relatives, during which the life story of the deceased and the funeral speech are discussed.
