Life

Peter Bichsel grew up as the son of a craftsman, initially in Lucerne and from 1941 in Olten . He trained as a primary school teacher at the teacher training college in Solothurn . In 1956 he married the actress Therese Spörri († 2005); he is the father of a daughter and a son. In 1957 he joined the Social Democratic Party of Switzerland (SPS), from which he left again in 1995. He describes himself as a socialist . He worked as a primary school teacher until 1968 (and for the last time in 1973). Between 1974 and 1981 he worked as a personal advisor and speechwriter for Federal Councilor Willi Ritschard , with whom he was friends. He was also close friends with the writer Max Frisch until his death in 1991. Jörg Steiner is said to have played a decisive role in his literary breakthrough , who referred him to Peter Lehner for first readings and later to Otto F. Walter for the publication of the “Milchmann anthology ”. Bichsel lives in Bellach near Solothurn.

Autograph

After smaller publications - especially poetry - in newspapers, a first attempt at prose appeared in 1960 as a private print . In the winter of 1963/1964 he took part in a prose writing course in Berlin, led by Walter Höllerer . A documentation volume , prose writing (1964), and a joint novel by the participants (including Hubert Fichte and Klaus Stiller ), Das Gästehaus (1965), to which Bichsel contributed the first chapter, testify to this course .

In 1964 he became known in one fell swoop with his briefest stories in Actually, Frau Blum the Milkman ; the Group 47 received him enthusiastically and gave him 1965 their Literature Prize. In 1968 his first columns were published in Weltwoche , which since then (currently in Schweizer Illustrierte ) have been his main work, so to speak. In these columns he often spoke on political issues. In 1970 he left the Swiss Writers' Association together with 21 other well-known authors and participated in the founding of the Olten group .

Peter Bichsel is a member of the Academy of Arts in Berlin and a corresponding member of the German Academy for Language and Poetry in Darmstadt.

His legacy is in the Swiss Literary Archives in Bern .
