Hans Bänziger (Germanist)

Hans Bänziger (born January 15, 1917 in Romanshorn ; † March 8, 2005 in Romanshorn; entitled to live in Lutzenberg AR ) was a Swiss German studies specialist , university professor , editor and literary historian from the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden .

Life

Hans Bänziger was a son of Emil Bänziger, owner of a dye works and a doctor of chemistry . In 1943 he married Klara Ida Sieber, daughter of the master baker Hans Sieber. From 1937 to 1942 he studied German , history and didactics in Zurich . In 1943 he earned a doctorate in philosophy . From 1943 to 1967 he worked as a canton school teacher in Trogen . From 1952 to 1967 he taught as a lecturer at the St. Gallen Commercial College . Bänziger completed his habilitation in 1965 with the study Heimat und Fremde, published in 1958 . From 1963 to 1967 he was co-editor of the magazine Reformatio . From 1967 to 1982 he was a professor at Bryn Mawr College ( Pennsylvania , USA ). Bänziger wrote numerous books about authors of the 20th century : Werner Bergengruen , published in 1950, Frisch and Dürrenmatt , published in 1960, and Peter Bichsel, Weg und Werk , published in 1984. He was a member of the Swiss Writers' Association and the PEN clubs .
