Why is the banana crooked? is a long-playing record for children published by Wagenbach-Verlag in 1971 . It consists of eleven separate spoken texts and songs, each separated by a nursery rhyme. content

The texts were unconventional for the circumstances at the time and in some cases also experimental. The nursery rhymes called Kindermund were compiled by Peter Rühmkorf and are characterized by an often cheeky, disrespectful tone with which they treat parents and social institutions and take up taboo topics. The first nursery rhyme also gave the title of the long-playing record:

“Why is the banana crooked?
Yes, if the banana were straight,
it wouldn't be a banana any more. "

reception

The record was largely positively rated in academic left-wing circles and viewed as an anti-authoritarian masterpiece.

Two years after its publication, however, it triggered a school scandal in Fredenbeck , Lower Saxony, which attracted nationwide attention. After the elementary school teacher Annegret Oellrich played the record that was recommended to her during a further training course in her fourth grade, there were protests from parents. This eventually culminated in a two-day school strike, pornography allegations and a complaint against the teacher for insulting. In the context of the complaint for insult, the public prosecutor's office has even investigated fornication with addicts.
