Stadtschreiber von Bergen (title of Stadtschreiber in Bergen-Enkheim) is a literary prize for German-speaking authors that was awarded from 1974 to 1976 - before the incorporation to Frankfurt - by the former city of Bergen-Enkheim ( a district of Frankfurt am Main since 1977 ) and has since been awarded by the Bergen-Enkheim cultural association on behalf of the City of Frankfurt am Main. The award "is considered the most prestigious city writer prize in German-speaking countries."

The award was established by Franz Joseph Schneider , a citizen of Bergen-Enkheim and author of Gruppe 47 . This created the first of a series of Stadtschreiber prizes (e.g. Mainz , Dresden ). However, this literary award has remained unique because no obligations are imposed on the distinguished writer. It includes a cash prize of 20,000 euros (as of 2020/2021) and one year of free living in the town clerk's house in Bergen-Enkheim, "An der Oberpforte" 4. A jury of nine each year decides on the award of the prize .

The award ceremony takes place every year on the Friday evening before the first Tuesday in September as part of the “Berger Markt” festival. The key handover, celebratory, inaugural and farewell speeches take place in the marquee in front of hundreds of visitors.

In 2009, the Kulturgesellschaft Bergen-Enkheim set up a town scribe archive on its premises in order to permanently document the works and work of the award winners. In addition to primary and secondary literature, the catalog contains an extensive collection of articles, autographs, phonograms and documents from the first to the current town clerk.
