Nicolas Born (born December 31, 1937 in Duisburg , † December 7, 1979 in Breese in the march near Dannenberg in the Lüchow-Dannenberg district ; actually Klaus Jürgen Born ) was a German writer .

Life

Born grew up on the Lower Rhine in Praest near Emmerich and in Essen , where he initially did an apprenticeship as a chemigrapher . After his first publications in newspapers and magazines, he was invited to the Literary Colloquium in 1964/1965 with the support of Ernst Meister , where, among other things, he co-wrote the community novel Das Gästehaus and reviewed literature for newspapers. In the so-called prose writing course by Walter Höllerer and Hans Werner Richter , young, previously unknown authors such as Hans Christoph Buch , Hermann Peter Piwitt and Peter Bichsel wanted to turn away from the ciphered, metaphor-rich language of the 1950s.

Born published his first novel with Kiepenheuer & Witsch in 1965 with The Second Day . The first volume of poetry, Marktlage , was published in 1967 . He took part in the International Writing Program (IWP) at the University of Iowa and returned from America with new influences from pop and beat lyric after the publication of his second volume of poetry Where My Head Stands . In 1972 Rowohlt published his most famous volume of poetry, Das Auge des Entdeckers , in which he contrasts the “delusional reality” with utopian moments of happiness.

After retreating to Wendland in Lower Saxony , where he campaigned against a planned nuclear repository and a reprocessing plant , Born wrote the novel The Earth-Away Side of History , which was largely greeted by critics as an "event". In 1979 Born was diagnosed with lung cancer, which he succumbed to on December 7, 1979.

Born's most famous novel The Fake , which appeared shortly before his death, was filmed in 1981 by Volker Schlöndorff . In autumn 2004, 25 years after Born's early death, his daughter Katharina Born re-edited the poems from the estate in Wallstein Verlag , which appeared in the Mainzer Series, NF , published by the Mainz Academy of Sciences and Literature . The band immediately reached number 1 on the SWR best list . In the following year the volume was awarded the Peter Huchel Prize as the most interesting new publication in the field of poetry .

In June 2007, Wallstein Verlag published the edition of Nicolas Born's letters in the Mainzer Series, NF . In addition to individual letters to Günter Grass , Uwe Johnson , Rolf Dieter Brinkmann , Ernst Meister , Alfred Kolleritsch and Dieter Wellershoff, it also contains the correspondence with Peter Handke , the correspondence with Günter Kunert , Hermann Peter Piwitt , Jürgen Theobaldy and , which has already been published in the literary journal Schreibheft Friedrich Christian Delius . The editor is again Born's youngest daughter Katharina Born, who looks after the author's estate on behalf of the community of heirs.

Born's novels and poetry were assigned to the Cologne School, Natural Poetry and New Innerity . Due to its very own tone and strong development, the work ultimately eludes any classification.

In 1999, Axel Kahrs and Christiane Beyer published the memorial book Der Landvermesser , which commemorated the twentieth anniversary of the author's death. The "Nicolas Born Foundation", largely led by Kahrs, promotes literature and literary studies in Schreyahn in Wendland . In memory of Nicolas Born, two Nicolas Born Prizes were donated. His grave is in Damnatz ( Lüchow-Dannenberg district ). A sculpture by the sculptor Klaus Müller-Klug stands on it . The estate is accessible in the archive of the Akademie der Künste , Berlin. In Dannenberg (Elbe) there is a Nicolas Born School (high school, secondary school) and a Nicolas Born library, which has another location in Hitzacker (Elbe) .

honors and awards

Born was a member of the German PEN Center , the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz (which played a key role in promoting the publication of the 2004 volume of poetry and the 2007 volume of letters), the German Academy for Language and Poetry in Darmstadt and, from 1975, a member of Jury of the Petrarca Prize .
