Jan-Pieter Barbian (born July 20, 1958 in Saarbrücken ) is a German cultural historian and has been the director of the Duisburg City Library since 1999 .

Barbian completed his studies in history , German and philosophy at the University of Trier in 1986 with a Magister Artium . In 1991 he started with a thesis on “Literary Politics in the Third Reich”. Institutions, competencies, fields of activity ”. Furthermore, he has been a member of the librarianship advisory board of the ekz.bibliotheksservice in Reutlingen since 2017 .

In the course of his work as director of the Duisburg City Library, Barbian published between September and October 2009 for the "Librarian in Residence", a blog of the Goethe Institute , and received invitations to several lecture tours to Chengdu , Guangzhou, from 2010 to 2016 , Hangzhou , Hong Kong , Beijing , Shanghai and Wuhan as well as Moscow , Perm and Genoa .

Since 2011, Barbian has also been a lecturer at the Institute for Optional Studies (IOS) at the University of Duisburg-Essen .

Jan-Pieter Barbian has been married since 2017 and has one son.

Barbian has numerous publications on the literary and cultural policy of the Nazi era, on film and politics in the Weimar Republic, on the history and literature of the Ruhr area in the 20th century, on Franco-German relations in the field of mining in the 18th and early years 19th century, on German-Dutch relations in the Weimar Republic and on German-Polish relations in the 20th century.
