Ernst Fischer (born February 19, 1951 in Vienna ) is an Austro-German Germanist and professor of book studies .

Life

Ernst Fischer studied at the University of Vienna and received his doctorate there in 1978. From 1979 to 1988 he was a research assistant and temporary academic advisor at the University of Munich , where he completed his habilitation in 1989. He was then a private lecturer and senior assistant in Munich, and in 1993 visiting professor at the University of Vienna. From 1993 until his retirement in 2014 he was a professor at the Institute for Book Studies at the University of Mainz .

Fischer's research focuses on the history of the book trade from the 18th to the 20th century. He is currently working on the history of the German PEN Club and is concerned with the communication-theoretical foundations of book history. After more than twenty years of working on the subject, Fischer's biographical handbook for publishers, booksellers & antiquarians from Germany and Austria who emigrated after 1933 was published in 2011 .
