Marcel Beyer (born November 23, 1965 in Tailfingen , Baden-Württemberg ) is a German writer who has emerged primarily as a poet , epic poet , essayist and editor . He is the recipient of the Georg Büchner Prize 2016.

life and work

Beyer grew up in Kiel and Neuss . From 1987 to 1991 he studied German , English and literature at the University of Siegen ; In 1992 he obtained his master's degree there with a thesis on Friederike Mayröcker . Performance works have been created since 1987 . From 1989 he edited the series Forgotten Authors of Modernism at the University of Siegen with Karl Riha . From 1990 to 1993 he worked as a lecturer on the literary magazine concepts . In 1992 he also contributed to the music magazine Spex until 1998 . He was Writer in Residence at University College London in 1996 , at the University of Warwick in Coventry in 1998 and at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin-Dahlem in 2008 . He is a member of the Berlin Academy of the Arts , the German Academy for Language and Poetry and the PEN Center Germany .

Beyer, who was initially heavily influenced by Friederike Mayröcker and the authors of the French Nouveau Roman , is the author of poetry , essays and novels that repeatedly deal with German history - especially with the era of National Socialism . In 2016 he was awarded the Georg Büchner Prize . In its explanation, the German Academy for Language and Poetry explains: “His texts are bold and delicate, insightful and incorruptible.
