Ulli Lust
Ulli Lust (* 1967 in Vienna ) is an Austrian comic artist , illustrator and online publisher ( electrocomics ). She is one of the most important German-speaking comic artists and is considered a representative of "documentary comics".
biography
Ulli Lust began an apprenticeship as a design and fashion illustrator in Vienna at the HTBLVA for the textile industry, Spengergasse, without completing her training and then illustrated some children's books. Since 1998 she has published under the name Lust, the maiden name of her mother. In her late twenties she studied graphic design at the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee , which she successfully completed.
Lust draws comic reports based on precise journalistic research, such as a report on the dying East German prefabricated housing estate Halle-Neustadt or the monthly photo column in the Berlin city newspaper Scheinschlag . It reproduces observations "from society". Another area is the erotic-mythological stories of the springpoems series , which are to be understood as a fertility ritual in comic form and are based on a prehistoric mythology.
Together with Kai Pfeiffer , she initiated the comic report projects of the cartoonists' group Monogatari - of which she is also a founding member - and was involved with drawings for the book Berlin- Helmholtzplatz 1998 + 2004 in the exhibition diving trips - drawing as reportage ( Kunstverein Hannover 2004, Kunsthalle Düsseldorf 2005). The Monogatari group was dissolved in 2005.
Your comic report on the Lucerne Bridge of the Dead was published by Le Monde diplomatique in June 2005 . In June 2005 she started her online publisher electrocomics, which publishes e-books and comic strips by more and more international comic artists and picture counters. In 2006 she received the ICOM special prize from the jury for this project .
In 2008 she published fashion victims, trend despisers, mini reports and picture columns from Berlin with the Berlin avant publishing house, as well as short stories in the anthologies Pomme d'Amour. 7 stories of love , Strapazin No. 91 and Spring No. 5 . The picture story Airpussy ( a hairraising ritual for spring to come ) followed in 2009 at the Belgian comic publisher l'employé du Moi .
In autumn 2009, Ulli Lust's autobiographical comic novel Today is the last day of the rest of your life was published by the German avant publishing house. The book is over 450 pages long and the author had been working on it for over four years. She drew one page at a time in three days. The comics specialist of the FAZ editorial team, Andreas Platthaus , found it a "sensation" and in 3sat Kulturzeit it was described as a " feminist statement". For the band she received the ICOM Prize 2010 for the best German comic publication, as well as the Max & Moritz Audience Prize of the Erlanger Comicsalon 2010, the Artémisia Prize 2011 and the Prix révélation des Festival International de la Bande Dessinée d'Angoulême 2011. The American edition of the book Today is the last day of the rest of your life (translation: Kim Thompson, Fantagraphics 2013) was nominated for all major American awards and won two of them, the Ignatz Award 2013 and the Los Angeles Times Book Award 2014.
In 2013 the graphic novel flying foxes , an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Marcel Beyer, will be published by Suhrkamp Verlag. Ulli Lust has lived and worked in Berlin, Prenzlauer Berg , since 1995 , and has a grown son. She is a professor at the University of Hanover . There she teaches drawing and comics in the Visual Communication course .
