Fertility cult

Fertility cult , also called fertility ritual , is a socially organized ritual that is carried out to promote human fertility , plant growth or to increase livestock and which is usually ascribed a magical effect. The different cults can be practiced as fertility dances, analogy magic , sacrifices or by means of touch. The dates for rainmaker ceremonies, dragon dances and other fertility cults are based on the seasonal course of nature.

Examples of fertility dances

One to the 4th millennium BC Cave painting from the Roca del Moros in the Spanish Comarca Garrigues , dated to the 3rd century BC, is interpreted as one of the oldest traditions of a fertility dance and referred to as danza fálica ("phallic dance").

The obando fertility dance is a Filipino dance ritual. Every year in May the men, women and children from Obando in the Bulacan province dance on the streets to the accompaniment of musical instruments made of bamboo. They wear traditional dance costumes and honor images of the patron saints San Pascual (St. Paschal), Santa Clara (St. Claire) and Nuestra Señora de Salambao (Our Lady of Salambao). While dancing, they sing the song Santa Clara Pinung-Pino .

Every spring is the Chaouia- Berbers in eastern Algeria , a fertility festival with the Abdaoui -Tanz organized.

The oriental belly dance could have developed from fertility dances with its imitation of the sexual act in the form of pelvic circles and other erotic movements.

The Trobriand dance shield was used in courtship dances on the Trobriand Islands in Papua New Guinea .
