The Comarca Garrigues is located in the province of Lleida of the Autonomous Community of Catalonia ( Spain ). The community association has an area of 797.6 km² and 18,833 inhabitants (2019).

location

The community association is located in the western part of Catalonia, south of the provincial capital Lleida . It borders in the north on the Comarca Pla d'Urgell , in the east on Urgell , in the southeast on Conca de Barberà , in the south on Priorat , in the west on Ribera d'Ebre and in the north-west on Segrià . Together with the comarcas Noguera , Pla d'Urgell, Segarra , Segrià and Urgell, the region forms the Ponent territory .

Garrigues is located in the southern part of the Catalan Central Depression, a plain with a few low hills. Only in the extreme south are ridges of up to 1,000 m. The area in the northeast is traversed by the Canal d'Urgell (built from 1829 to 1862) and the Canal auxiliar (built from 1929 to 1932). Both canals are fed by the Segre and Corb rivers and are used for agricultural irrigation in the region.

economy

The comarca is characterized by agriculture and livestock. Grain, animal feed, fruit, olives and almonds are grown. Pig and poultry farms are located in the north. The underdeveloped industry processes food, produces textiles and furniture. The community association is known for the olive oil, pressed from the Arbequines olives.

Attractions

The Iberian settlement from the Iron Age at Arbeca Els Vilars with Cheval de Frize , several oil museums, including the theme park about oil in Les Borges Blanques and the rock paintings on the Roca de los Moros near El Cogul are worth seeing .
