The Baix Llobregat [ ˈbaʒ ʎuβɾəˈɣat ] is a comarca ( Catalan "district") in the province of Barcelona of the Autonomous Community of Catalonia in Spain . The community association has an area of ​​487.86 km² and 825,963 inhabitants (2019).

location

The association of municipalities is located in the southern part in the center of Catalonia. It borders in the north on the Comarca Bages , in the east on Vallès Oriental and Barcelonès , in the west on Anoia , Alt Penedès and Garraf and in the south on the 19 km long coast of the Mediterranean . Together with the comarcas Alt Penedès, Barcelonès, Garraf, Maresme , Vallès Occidental and Vallès Oriental, the region forms the territory of Àmbit Metropolità de Barcelona .

The long but narrow area lies in the valley of the Río Llobregat, which is lined on both sides . The Garraf massif is on the western side, the l'Ordal massif on the eastern side. In the northern part of the comarca the Llobregat flows in a narrow valley. Shortly before it flows into the Mediterranean in the south of the region, a broad plain forms. In the far north, the solid is from Montserrat to the Monastery of Santa Maria de Montserrat of Benedictines .

economy

There is a densely populated and highly industrialized area between Martorell and the mouth of the Llobregat. Although the Baix Llobregat is one of the most industrialized areas in Spain, agriculture is still practiced in this comarca - especially in the areas of Sant Boi de Llobregat , El Prat de Llobregat , Viladecans and Gavà .

Various motorways and national roads cross the comarca. Several S-Bahn lines ( Rodalies ) connect the region with Barcelona. The Barcelona airport is located on the territory of the Association of Municipalities in El Prat del Llobregat.
