history
The oldest excavations date back to the 6th century BC. Dated.
The development of the place, which at that time was still directly on the Mediterranean Sea , did not begin to develop until Roman times . From the 6th to the 7th century the Arabs ruled the city they called Alcalá. The place on the delta of the Río Llobregat was an important strategic place for them. While other cities around Alcalá were already being recaptured by the Christians, the Arabs were able to hold Alcalá for several centuries. After the Christian conquest, the place was called Sent Boy until the 18th century. In 1752 a monastery was founded by monks of the Capuchin order .
In 1875 Sant Boi had 3000 inhabitants. In 1900 it was the largest town in the Comarca Bajo Llobregat with 5000 inhabitants; in 1935 there were already 10,000. The first larger factory was built in 1917, a sewer system was built and the streets were paved.
During the Spanish Civil War Sant Boi was second republican , after the conquest by the nationalists, the name of the place was renamed Vilaboi and later San Baudilio de Llobregat. Only after Franco's death did the place get its current name Sant Boi de Llobregat.
In the 1960s, many Spaniards emigrated from the poor south and west of Spain to Catalonia, particularly to Barcelona. Because the apartment rents were too expensive there, they settled in the outskirts of the metropolis . This resulted in rapid population growth in Sant Boi. In 1960 the population was 20,000, in 1975 it was already 65,000.
economy
Although the main business activity is concentrated in the fields of trade and services, there is also industry worth mentioning in Sant Boi, especially in the metallurgical sector. Agriculture is promoted by the fertile estuary of the Llobregat and the mild climate. Many types of vegetables are grown in Sant Boi, especially the artichokes.
