Marc Gasol Sáez (born January 29, 1985 in Barcelona ) is a Spanish basketball player who has been active in the North American professional league NBA since 2008 . With a size of 2.13 meters it is used in the position of the center .
During his time with the Memphis Grizzlies , Gasol was named three NBA All-Star and one NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award winner . He has been playing for the Toronto Raptors since 2019 , with whom he won the NBA title in the 2018/19 season .
He is the brother of Pau Gasol , who is also active in the NBA.
career
The 2.13 meter tall center began its career in the youth of FC Barcelona . In the summer of 2001 he moved to the United States with his brother Pau Gasol , who moved to the NBA for the Memphis Grizzlies . There he played in the basketball team of the Lausanne Collegiate School until he graduated from high school in 2003 , before moving back to his homeland, where he played again for the FC Barcelona youth team. In October 2003 he already made his debut in the first squad, where he was only used sporadically that season and mostly played for the second team. In the summer of 2004 he was finally accepted into the professional team and played two seasons in a row with the Catalans.
Due to his short playing time, he only managed 10 minutes per game in 2005/06, Marc Gasol moved to CB Girona in the summer of 2006 . There he quickly developed into a major player and won the FIBA EuroCup in his first year .
On June 28, 2007, he was selected in the NBA Draft in 48th place by the Los Angeles Lakers . Because of his high transfer fee, he stayed in Europe for the time being. On February 2, 2008, the draft rights to him were given in a large trade to the Memphis Grizzlies. This trade is interesting in that, in return, Marc's brother Pau Gasol was sent to LA by the Grizzlies. The 2007/08 season should be Marc Gasol's sporting breakthrough, he finished the season with an average of 16.6 points, 8.4 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game and was named MVP of the Spanish league.
NBA
In the summer of 2008 he moved to the Memphis Grizzlies , where he reached an average of 11.9 points, 7.4 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.1 blocks per game with an average playing time of 30.7 minutes as a rookie . In February 2009 he was allowed to take part in the Rookie Challenge as one of the best debutants of the season and was elected to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team at the end of the season . In the 2009/10 season Gasol established himself in the starting five of the Grizzlies and increased his statistics to 14.6 points, 9.3 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.6 blocks. As a sophomore , he also took part in the Rookie Challenge again. In the 2010/11 season , the Grizzlies reached the playoffs for the first time in five years, in particular the Spaniard showed strong performances and led his team after a 4-2 first round win against the best team in the Western Conference , the San Antonio Spurs , into Conference semifinals, where they lost 3: 4 to the Oklahoma City Thunder in a gripping duel .
Because of his strong first half of the 2011/12 season , Marc Gasol was elected to the Western Conference All-Star Team by the league's 30 head coaches . His team reached the play-offs again, but failed there in the first round to the Los Angeles Clippers .
After completing the 2012/13 regular season , Marc Gasol was the first European in history to be voted NBA Defensive Player of the Year . In January 2015 it was announced that Gasol will be invited to the All-Star-Game for the second time and will start for the first time for the western selection. His brother Pau, on the other hand, was nominated as a starter for the East selection. This is the first time in NBA history that a brother and sister face each other in the All-Star Game. Gasol had his best season with 17.4 points per game. The 2015-16 season was less fortunate. After 66 games, Gasol broke his right foot and was out for the remainder of the season.
After more than ten years with the Memphis Grizzlies, Gasol was transferred to the Toronto Raptors in February 2019 for Jonas Valanciunas , CJ Miles and Delon Wright . There he won his first championship. He and Pau are the only case in which two brothers have each won the NBA championship.
